Donation to Community Centre

Healthy Brandon in motion wants to help everyone stay active all year round. As part of the strategy for reducing barriers to physical activity and promote free winter physical activities in the community, Mari Kitching, chair of Healthy Brandon in Motion is shown presenting helmets to Dana Austin, representing the East End Community Centre.  With them is Brian Barnes, manager of Source for Sports where the helmets and skates where purchased.  Healthy Brandon received funding last year from Manitoba in motion to support winter activities in the Brandon area.   This generous donation will promote safety, encourage participation and engage the community in physical activity long associated with Canadian winters.

The East End Community Centre, which celebrates its 80th birthday in 2012, has seen as many as 70 skaters out enjoying the great Canadian weather.  On average, the centre sees about 30-50 skaters (both adult and children) out on a nightly basis.  If you or someone you know would like to skate but don’t have a pair, the East End Community Centre has skates available for loan.  Last year, the centre held a skate drive, contacting former East Enders to donate their unused skates.  They were overwhelmed with the generosity of donations and now have a good supply to loan out.

The East End Community Centre is located at Park St and Victoria Ave and is open for skating Monday – Thursday, 7-9 pm, Friday, 7-10 pm, Saturday 1-5 and 7-10pm and Sundays 1-5 and 7-9 pm.  There is no charge for skating, or loan of helmets or skates.  During school holidays, the centre is open during the afternoons.  If you are interested in helping out and volunteering see canteen staff at the centre.

So, this winter, why not give it a try?  Get out and get active!
